WHY THE GREENWAY IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
The Dulles Greenway is a privately owned 14-mile toll road that extends the Dulles Toll Road from Dulles International Airport to Leesburg, Virginia. It offers commuters a non-stop alternative to Route 7 and 28. Taking the Greenway means that there are 7 less lights where motorists have to stop. During peak travel times, the trip from Leesburg to Dulles International Airport can be made in less than 15 minutes. That means that on average, a commuter can save up to 37 minutes in travel time when commuting to and from work.
Not only does the commuter save time, but with the elimination of at grade intersections, and separation from oncoming traffic, accident rates are lower on the Greenway than those on urban arterial roads, such as Routes 7 and 28. The lower accident rate, combined with a shorter commute in terms of distance, reduces the exposure of the Greenway users to accidents.
The Greenway offers a good value for the money to motorists in the form of time savings, safety and less stressful driving conditions than the surrounding road network. While the toll may seem high, the Greenway is a privately owned toll road that receives no funding from federal, state or local governments. None of Virginia’s tax dollars go to the Dulles Greenway. Funds to finance operations, maintenance, capital improvements and an increasing debt service must come from user financed fees (tolls).
The Dulles Greenway offers a congestion management toll, so a motorist can travel at non- congested hours to save money. The benefits to the motorist are a lower toll during non-congested hours, and the benefit to the Greenway is the ability to reduce the need for additional capital expenditures to service peak period demand. Less congestion means everyone benefits as it will cut down emission of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide as well as reducing fuel consumption.
The Greenway keeps traffic moving, by offering electronic toll collection through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s E-ZPass System. E-ZPass is a quick convenient way to pay your toll without stopping. E-ZPass is accepted in Virginia, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia.
